Worth a read: DeepMind's CEO, Demis Hassabis, talks to TIME about AI (duh). A few folks have been pointing out the sparrow in the room...no seriously, Sparrow is DeepMind's Chatbot that they're running a closed beta for in 2023. No doubt a response to ChatGPT. It'll be able to cite sources in its responses, which ChatGPT may be able to do - although we've not been allowed to do that (remember the browing:disabled prompt that it has?). Another interesting part of this interview is when Hassabis said “We’re getting into an era where we have to start thinking about the freeloaders, or people who are reading but not contributing to that information base,” he says. “And that includes nation states as well.” He declines to name which states he means—“it’s pretty obvious, who you might think”—but he suggests that the AI industry’s culture of publishing its findings openly may soon need to end." Let's see what happens!

Everyone likes to pretend they know about the new capabilities that GPT-4 can bring. "Apparently it can look after a house plant", "It can heal animal wounds by listening to their breath", "It can run a billion dollar company by itself" and on and on the rumours swirl. BUT, we're going to have to wait. It's release was originally planned for late Q4 2022/Q1 2023 which may move back slightly if I'm reading this tweet correctly... 'OpenAI’s GPT-4 will launch only when they can do it safely & responsibly. “In general we are going to release technology much more slowly than people would like. We're going to sit on it for much longer..."' Oh and a video model is apparently in the works too...!

3/

We all know Reid Hoffman; PayPal, Linkedin and Greylock. He's started a podcast with a familiar co-host, ChatGPT. Yup, it's happening folks. In the first episode, ChatGPT and Reid start with self-reflection by talking about the Turing Test, and expand into AI’s potential impact across several creative fields. Talking AI with AI - ChatGPT as a podcast guest. (link)

I just have to proudly say this - my wife asked if I wanted a McDonald's breakfast this morning and I said NO. Can I get a virtual high five?! That's pretty insane will power I'd say. Anyway... McDonalds just released an advertisement for Lunar New Year 2023 where Luma AI NeRF + Fields Editor is used. p.s. she brought home a hash brown for me anyway. So I get the pleasure of saying no and pleasure of eating the best part. Bah de bah bah bah, I'm lovin' it. Sorry, had to.

An update on the AI love story of the year, Microsoft & OpenAI; “Once $92 billion in profit plus $13 billion in initial investment are repaid (to Microsoft) and once the other venture investors earn $150 billion, all of the equity reverts back to OpenAI.” This was from the article in Fortune: "Inside the structure of OpenAI’s looming new investment from Microsoft and VCs". Gary Marcus commented about it here

Then The Information published its piece, "Microsoft + OpenAI: Inside Tech’s Hottest Romance", which revealed a few more interesting points.

  • proposing nonprofit status again after profit is paid back
  • potentially increasing investor cap. Instead of hard cap, 20% increase per year. So investors can still get VC-like returns
  • Altman hasn’t got equity in the for profit arm. Unclear if this deal changes that

I wonder what today will bring for this story...

The handsome marketing magician is at it again...Ryan Reynolds recorded this video where he asked ChatGPT to write a commercial, in his voice (swearing and all), for Mint Mobile (which he owns/part-owns?) ChatGPT isn't nearly as handsome as Ryan, but it's marketing chops aren't all that bad! Did I mention I think Ryan Reynolds is handsome? Don't worry, my wife agrees.

ChatGPT got some shiny new upgrades; improvements to the model - which is very vague - but it should be 'generally better'. Shouldn't we all?! And, stop generating - you know, when its spitting out nonsense and you just wish it would stop!!! Yeah, it's got that now. ChatGPT, coming soon to your bank account - It's also looking at monetisation methods (via OpenAI's Discord). AND, OpenAI have opened a waitlist for it's professional, paid, version of ChatGPT. (link)

The real winner in AI so far? Microsoft. Microsoft eyes $10 billion bet on ChatGPT.

Whew, who saw that coming?! Not me. A little recap of how well they're doing:

  • $1bn in OpenAI (2019)
  • Owns GitHub which released Copilot
  • Dalle powers Bing Image Creator
  • Valle which produces an AI voice from 3s of input
  • GPT in Word, PowerPoint, Outlook etc
  • GPT-powered Bing
  • $10bn, 49% stake in OpenAI + 75% profit

The last point is from the recent news reported by Semafor. Apparently, Microsoft is eyeing up a $10bn deal with OpenAI. They'd get 49% ownership (49% to investors and 2% to OpenAI's non-profit parent).

Also 75% of profits would go to Microsoft until it recoups it's investment.

Satya Nadella is a boss.

Oh and you may have overlooked VALL-E which I included a few days ago. Trained on 60k hours of English speech, it can generate speech in any voice from only 3s of that voice input. (link) A good post on it here.

Is this huge win for Microsoft somewhat of a loss for OpenAI and the rest of us? I guess we will wait to find out.

Oh, and don't feel bad for Google sitting in their code red bunker.

  • Google paid ~$650M to acquire DeepMind in 2014
  • OpenAI is currently "valued" $29 Bn
  • OpenAI's revenue is "tens of millions"
  • DeepMind's 2020 revenue was $1.13 Bn and was profitable (source)

This year will be a big one for Microsoft vs Google. Who you betting on?

I built a way to upload data and you can ask it questions with AI. So you could theoretically upload any data (my example is animal facts) to a google sheet, then use this automation to enter a question e.g. "What is the tallest mammal?" and AI using embeddings will search through the data and return the response. Let's talk about the $29Bn elephant in the room... OpenAI is raising at an eye-watering valuation. It was valued at a $14Bn in 2021. So 2x in 1 year. Cool, cool, cool.

The deal is being negotiated with Thrive Capital and Founders Fund, and it could total at least $300 million in share sales. (Altman says OpenAI has no plans to be acquired or go public so investors would only be able to cash out through secondary share sales.)

They're calling it a tender offer (no, not a very sweet, loving offer). It means existing shareholders like employees can sell their shares to the investors.

NO deal has been made yet! But I reckon it'll happen any minute now...

A few important things to know/remember:

  • OpenAI was founded as a non-profit but has a for-profit arm, created in 2019
  • Investors returns are capped at ~20x
  • Sam Altman said they'll make $1Bn revenue 'soon'
  • This valuation would make it one of the most valuable startups in the US

Sam Altman has talked about Trillion dollar companies being made in AI. I think OpenAI will be the first. And at this rate it could be in the next 1-2 years.

🤌 Ben's Picks

Apple's got a new audiobook service. I forgot Apple Books was a thing, genuinely.

It uses AI to narrate the books instead of humans (of course).

It'll make it easier and cheaper for authors and publishers to make audiobooks. Say goodbye to expensive, time-consuming recording sessions.

Right now, it's only available for English-language romance and fiction books and only two voices, Madison and Jackson, are available.

The funny thing is, Apple is really specific about which kinds of romance and fiction books it will do. It's only literary, historical, and women's fiction right now. No mysteries, thrillers, science fiction, or fantasy. If you search for "AI narration" in the Books app, you'll find a bunch of romance novels narrated by Apple's AI.

As with any AI voice, they're perfectly understandable, but they don't have the warm, loving tone of a human voice. But I bet that'll change as AI voice technology improves. Try getting AI to whisper sweet nothings in your ear.

Apple was supposed to launch the service in November, but it got delayed because of all the drama with Elon Musk at Twitter and some layoffs at Meta. Apparently, Apple has been trying to get independent publishers to use its service and is willing to cover the production costs in exchange for royalties

Unlike Apple, Amazon's Audible service only allows human narrators (at the moment). But I bet that changes soon.

Spotify is also trying to make audiobooks a big part of its streaming service, but it's been having some problems with Apple's rules about in-app payments.
